I began working on metal in 1993 after
discovering the Mexican retablo paintings (images of patron saints
painted on tin) which date back to the early 1700s. The Mexican artists
painted on tin because it was readily available and much less expensive
than linen or canvas. Each of my metal canvases is hand forged. I
achieve a stain glass affect by using translucent color washes which
allow parts of the metallic surface underneath to be revealed. |
